Bible Reading:

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Word:

I love the Psalms. All 150 chapters are such a wonderful picture of what prayer is supposed to look like – raw, real, relevant, and alway reverent. These verses capture the full spectrum of our ever changing human condition and temper them with the constant reminder of who God is, who He says we are, and what He alone is able to do.

In Psalm 46, we are reminded 3 times of who God is (1, 7, 11), what He is able to do (5, 6 , 9) and what He asks us to do (2, 10). So remember –

“God is your refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalms‬ ‭46:1‬ ‭

“The Lord Almighty is with you; the God of Jacob is your fortress.” Psalm 46:7

“The Lord Almighty is with you; the God of Jacob is your fortress.” Psalm 46:11

And because of this, “… you will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭46:2‬ ‭

And you can, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭46:10‬ ‭

God is the same yesterday, today and forever – there will always be seasons where storms are raging, but God is and will always be a place of refuge in these times! May these truths encourage you today !

Prayer:

God, give me the wisdom to run to you first. To talk to you first. To sit with you first. To depend on you and to trust you above all other options. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Skillwork:

Take a moment an “be still” with the Lord today. Sit with Him, enjoy His presence, and ask Him to give you a “peace that transcends all understanding” (Phil. 4:6-7)
