REFLECT
During a workout, it’s common to feel like we’ve reached our limit. However, it’s essential to take a moment to catch our breath, assess our situation, and strategize a path forward. This is common among athletes, who often check their mental state, analyze their environment, and determine the best solution to overcome any obstacle. We can achieve more as competitors by taking a step back and evaluating our situation.
What happens when we don’t take a step back to assess things? Two things happen.
1. You try and push through a movement without thinking things through and get injured.
2. You ignore your body’s warning signs, push yourself harder than you should, and get burned out due to not listening to your own mental cues.
By carefully evaluating their abilities and the competition, athletes can determine an optimal approach to maximize their performance and achieve success, much like a weightlifter who adjusts their weights to build strength and endurance over time. In both cases, the key is to find the right balance between challenge and safety, pushing oneself to grow and improve while still being mindful of one’s limits.
James 1:5 talks about assessing your situation with the Lord. The verse reads, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
This means that we can confidently approach God, knowing He is always willing to help us and guide us in the right direction. By seeking His wisdom and guidance in life and our workout routines, we can improve our physical health and well-being while growing closer to Christ.
The next time you face a challenging situation, remember that regrouping and figuring things out is okay. You’ll be better off for it.
RESPOND
1. Commit James 1:5 to memory.
2. Write down one way to better handle things when faced with a challenging situation.
