Our names matter to us. If someone mistakenly calls us by the wrong name, it matters. Why is that? It’s because our names serve as a the primary way we are defined.
Throughout the Bible we see people’s names used to define their character. Abraham, Jacob, his sons, and numerous others had names that signified their identity. The greatest person to ever live on this planet was named with purpose. “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
Who you are matters, so it matters what we are called. Peter, who was so-named by Jesus, specifies this truth in the passage above. Our identity in Christ matters. It means everything. And, when we realize who we are, it changes everything!
