“Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,
but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.“
Word:
Has anyone been following the news about the uprising of common stock day-traders coming together to boost up flailing stock values causing massive hedge funds to lose billions of dollars? Ironically, this same practice is employed by the big hedge funds every day; but the moment that the power is flipped to small investors now they are calling for regulation to “stop the bleeding.”
The whole ordeal got me thinking about what has any lasting value at all? I mean it’s not like the stocks gained value because the product or service improved. Is our entire financial system just a big sham? Lest any of us need a reminder about stock market crashes, just a decade ago we watched the world economy crash down due in part to poor financial stewardship at every level of society from lenders, to borrowers, banks, credit rating agencies and the government.
With all of the complexity and turbulence of the world economy, today’s scripture provides a warning to those who follow Christ, “He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like the green leaf.” In times like these, it is so easy to forget the real source of our provision; so easy to lose track of what has real lasting value.
How you steward your money should be a reflection of your trust in God’s economy. Believers need to submit control of their finances to the Lord by learning about biblical financial principles. Then invite God into your financial life by seeking his counsel on important decisions.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I have some pressing financial needs that I want to lay at your altar today. I need wisdom to make wise decisions that will bless your Kingdom and not my own. I put my full trust in you. Everything that I have is yours. Do with it what you will.
Skillwork:
Spend some time reflecting today on where you are putting your trust. Ask yourself if you have the courage to surrender it to God. If you don’t, spend some time praying and talking to God about why that is and asking him to change your heart.
