Bible Reading:
Philippians 2:5-11
“5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.“
Word:
In today’s scripture, Paul is talking to the church at Philippi and trying to restore unity in the church. The church at Philippi is in the middle of a quarrel between two ladies, which is threatening to destroy the church. The key to restoring unity is humility.
The opposite of humility is pride, and often the cause of conflict between two individuals. Pride sets one person against another, and the only way to cure it is by humility, which Paul says we should be like Jesus, who provided the example of humility for us. When we are at conflict with one another, the only path to peace is through humility.
In verse 5, Paul tells us have the same attitude as Jesus did. Verse 6 and 7 says he gave up his divine privileges and took up the humble position as a human. He gave up his position of power and his rights. He was humiliated all the way to the point of death, so that there could be unity for all.
Instead of insisting he was right, he took all of our sins and died on the cross. Next time you find yourself in a quarrel, remember to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus did. Only then, can you find unity and peace.
Prayer:
Father, help me apply your words in my life today. Show me what it means to have an attitude like Christ Jesus did. Take away my pride and fill me with humility to bring peace to this world. I pray in Christ’s name, Amen.
Skillwork:
Reflect on the areas of your life that could use more humility. Humility often times is thinking of someone else instead of yourself. One of the best ways to practice humility is through serving others. Find some areas that you can serve others, whether it be at a food bank, delivering a meal to someone in need, or mentoring a child.
