Bible Reading:
Deuteronomy 8:11-20
13 “You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. 14 The peoples have heard; they tremble; pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; trembling seizes the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. 16 Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm, they are still as a stone, till your people, O Lord, pass by, till the people pass by whom you have purchased. 17 You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. 18 The Lord will reign forever and ever.” 19 For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. 20 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”
Word:
Moses is basically giving a motivational speech. He gathers all of Israel together and shares some wisdom with them before they go into the Promised Land. He starts in chapter 5 with the Ten Commandments and covers pretty much from A-Z through the whole book of Deuteronomy. In chapter 8, Moses zeros in on PRIDE.
Moses tells them not to become proud by forgetting what all God has done for them, getting them to this point. He also tells them that once they get into the Promised Land and begin to produce wealth to NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR IT. He gets all the credit! Because it is all by Him, through Him and FOR HIM!
How awesome would it be if we consistently gave God the credit? For our PRs in the gym, our ability to work, the money we have, the ability to run, jump rope, squat…and even breathe! He is the source of all we have, produce, and give! We wonder sometimes why we go through tough seasons of life, but I have found those are the times I realize how much I need God. It is an opportunity for me to depend on God rather than myself. To see Him be my strength in my weakness, because He is our strength!
Prayer:
Lord, may I give you all the credit for everything and depend on Your strength not my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Skillwork:
Think about what you may have taken credit for that you know God deserves the credit. How can you give Him the credit this week? How have you viewed weakness? Begin to look for how God’s strength shows up in your weakness.
