REFLECT
What was the first information we submitted when registering for the Open? Was it information about our performance like a 1-rep max? Was it another measurement like our height or weight? No, it was the most important information we can share, because it is symbolic of what means the most to us. We submitted our name.
Our names matter to us. If someone mistakenly calls us by the wrong name, it matters. Why is that? It’s because our names serve as the primary way we are defined.

Throughout Scripture we see people’s names used to define their character. Abraham, Jacob, his sons, and numerous others had names that signified their identity. The greatest man to live on this planet was named with purpose. “You shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
John records seven statements of Jesus that describe His identity:
“I am the bread of life” (John 6:35)
“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12)
“I am the door of the sheep” (John 10:7)
“I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11)
“I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6)
“I am the true vine” (John 15:1)
Each of these statements begins with two words: “I am.” A close investigation of these words not only points to the concept of identity, but also to the covenant name of God. Jesus is not only describing Himself through these statements. He is also telling us His identity is the same as the Father. In Jesus we see the one true God – the “I AM.”
The first step to developing a relationship with someone is learning their name. This is also true as we learn to follow Jesus. We must understand He is the true God. He is deity. And when we unite with Him through faith we are given a new name – through His identity. Our identity becomes wrapped up in His identity. What used to define us no longer does, because His name is all that matters.
“Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.” – Hebrews 13:5
