Bible Reading:

Psalm 1:1-6

1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Word:

There’s a lot of messages that the world sends to us. Many that we’re not  even aware of as we go throughout the day. If we’re not careful, they become part of the messages we tell ourselves and soon these small lies grow and become part of our belief system and worldview.

That’s why it’s so important for us to not only read God’s word, but know it intimately, and also memorize it. When life happens, what verses do we repeat to ourselves? When the enemy tries to whisper lies in our ears, what truth do we repeat to ourselves?

The passage we read today has some heavy verses, right? They don’t tread lightly, and just get straight to the point. The righteous meditate on God’s law morning and night. Those that don’t are like chaff the wind blows away. What that means is that they have nothing to anchor them when the strong winds of life come.

When you’re discouraged or angry at life, are you repeating the situation and anger, or can you choose to instead repeat, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” from Psalm 103:1? It’s good to share with God what’s going on and confess to him your anger or frustration, but it’s not good to dwell on it and stay there. Sometimes we have to choose to change the narrative and change the conversation in our mind to reorient ourselves.

This month, let’s start arming ourselves with verses to help reorient our hearts and minds on God so we’re anchored in times when the winds of life come.

Prayer:

God, I want to know you and what you say. You made me and love, and have given me a gift of you words literally written down so I can read them whenever I want. Thank you for that! Please guide me to the verses are should start memorizing now to better anchor me in the season you currently have me.  In Jesus’ name, amen!

Skillwork:

Start memorizing some Bible verses. Either search ones that are pertinent to the situation you’re currently in, or open up to Psalms and Proverbs. Psalms is filled with verses that address how we feel and our hearts, while Proverbs is filled with wisdom and knowledge for our minds.
