Bible Reading:
Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.“
Word:
I am a father of two young kids and one of the responsibilities of raising them is to speak life into their ears. There is a saying that says, “They will become what you tell them they will become.” This means my words that I speak to my kids will have a direct impact on their future.
If I am constantly telling them that, “You’re bad!” “You are driving me crazy!” “What were you thinking?!” etc., then at some point those words will be programmed into their thinking. They will start to believe they are not enough and they can’t do anything right.
As a parent, the words I use will be the ones that they will hear the most, especially when they are young. As they get older, there will be other words and voices that they hear from this world. The world is full of voices that sound like death. Our words have immense power. Think about how God created the world. God said, “Let there be…” and there was. Life was created when God used his words and spoke. Every time we speak, do our words create hope and life or darkness and death?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I pray that I learn to use my words to bring hope to a fallen world. Help remind me what you say about me and not what the world says about me so that you will be glorified in my life. It’s in Jesus name that I pray, AMEN.
Skillwork:
Reflect on all of our interactions both in person and on social media within the last week. What were the words you used? Were the words that you used a reflection of God in your life?
