Bible Reading:
Psalms 146:5
“Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God…“
Word:
Many today place their hope and trust in material things. They rely on wealth, a successful career, a loving relationship, their status. There is not necessarily anything wrong with any of these things. The question is, however, are these things a strong enough foundation to build your life upon? When one or all of these things would fall or fail, what would hold you upright?
To have a strong foundation is essential. We know and understand this from our strength training days in the gym; without a trustworthy grip on the basics, like the air squat, how can we add load on the barbell? It would be a sure way to injure yourself.
The Bible warns us not to put our trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save; on the contrary, happy is he whose help is Jacob’s God, whose hope is in the Lord their God. By placing our hope in the Lord alone, and never letting go, this hope becomes an unbreakable spiritual lifeline. And we, like Abraham, will understand the meaning of hoping against hope, hoping even when the situation seems impossible. When all around us seems to be hectic or chaotic, we will have this sure foundation of trust that God can work all things together for our good. Our reliance is not on material things; our dependence is on the creator of all things.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you that I can put my hope in you. Thank you for being my sure foundation. When the storms of life come, I know I will not fall because I trust in you, my rock and steadfast anchor of my soul. Please help me to share this hope with those who need it most.
Skillwork:
The Word of God is indeed a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our pathway. When we are feeling hopeless, we can rely on the Word to build up our hope. If you are feeling hopeless, read Psalms 146 allow the Word of God to change your perspective. Our hope is placed not in an outcome but the Lord.
