We’ve got your daily encouragement, written by Polly Barcol.

Bible Reading:

Proverbs 15:33

“The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
    and humility comes before honor.”

Proverbs 18:12

Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty,
    but humility comes before honor.

Word:

We live in the CrossFit world where we are timed, and reps are counted. We put our scores in and are ranked according to our performance. We expect to get recognized for doing well. We want to rise to the top of the leader board so that we have the bragging rights of being number one. And this culture attracts competitive people who will continue to raise the bar for that number one spot. These are not bad things; it is just reality.

In this culture, humility is not necessarily recognized. At our gym, we recognize the humble servants at our annual banquet with a “me three” award. But this is only once a year, unlike the score board that is every day.

In God’s Kingdom, however, this world’s culture is turned on its head. Jesus said the first shall be last (Matthew 20:16) and that He came to serve (Matthew 20:28). Then, in the verses today in Proverbs, the writer repeatedly says that “humility comes before honor.” In the Kingdom of God, we are honored when we are humble. Not a self-deprecating kind of humble that says we are worth nothing. But a humility that says I am nothing without Jesus, but with Jesus I can do all things.

Humility in God’s Kingdom says that God will be recognized above all.

Prayer:

Lord, may You be lifted up and may anything I could be recognized for point back to You in my life! In Jesus Name, amen!

Skillwork:

Write down some of your accomplishments and then thank Jesus for the ability to accomplish those things.
