Bible Reading:
“The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.’”
Luke 1:35
Word:
In today’s scripture reading, an angel called Gabriel comes to visit Mary and says to her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” The verses before tell us that Mary will give birth to the Son of God. Mary’s response is how is this possible? She is a virgin, but the Angel says the power of the Most High will make it possible.
Mary doesn’t question the Angel any further after this. What about Joseph? Can you imagine what he was thinking? How can Mary have a child when she was a virgin? Was she lying to him? Joseph, even planned to break off the wedding with Mary. However, in the end he responded the same way that Mary responded. They both responded with obedience to God.
Did you know an African Impala can jump to a height over 10 feet and cover a distance of greater than 30 feet? Yet these creatures can be kept in an enclosure with just a 3-foot wall. They will not jump if they cannot see where their feet will land. Often this can describe us as well. We are scared to do something that God is calling us to do. However, if you are a believer, then our only response should be to obey when God calls us. Just like Mary, we have the power of the Most High on our side as well.

Skillwork:
What is God calling you to do right now? We all have a chance to make a difference in our homes, communities, country, and in the world. Make a list of things you can do to affect your home and your community. Then pray and ask God how he would use you to make a difference. Be ready to obey when he calls.
