Bible Reading:
1 Corinthians 13:8
“Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.”
Word:
My favorite part of this passage in the Message translation is where it says “understanding will reach its limit.” I believe this is my favorite part because in a sense, it perfectly describes love. How many times have we seen love where it just doesn’t make sense? I’m not talking about the little person and the 7 foot tall man who marry each other, I’m talking about love that doesn’t make sense because it feels so undeserved.
We’ve all been there, we’re at our lowest and God does something to reach out a hand and smile down on us personally, like we’re the only one who exists that day. We can’t describe it as anything other than overwhelming joy…and He wants us to feel that forever. Of course, feeling it is the easy part, receiving is always the easiest route but he wants more! I believe that true love, the one that never dies, is felt when we pass it on.
Have you ever forgiven someone who didn’t deserve it? Have you ever shown love where it didn’t make sense? I truly believe there will be people who we meet in heaven that are a result of us showing the love of God to others. I love the saying that goes “preach often but use words only when necessary.”
Our actions can speak so much louder than words at times. If we show love we represent God well…especially when it isn’t the respected response. 1John 4:19 says “We love because he first loved us.” The eternal God gave us the gift of love, to receive is amazing…to GIVE feels even better sometimes!
Prayer:
God, thank you that you love us, especially when we don’t deserve it. Help us to spread your love by showing it to others, especially when they don’t deserve it. Help us to see others the way you see them and not through the dirty lenses that we use. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Skillwork:
Find those people that are the toughest to love… and ask God to help you love them. This may also be yourself! Ask God to help you define what love looks like, your biggest hang up may just be a skewed idea of what loving them looks like!
