Bible Reading:

Matthew 6:16-18

16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Word:

Have you ever been in your car looking for an address, and you turn down your radio to see better? It sounds crazy, but there really is a reason we do this, and you are not crazy! We turn down the music to remove the distractions to focus on the more important task of finding our destination. The spiritual act of fasting is the same concept. We are turning down the noise and distractions of the world so that we can focus on hearing from God and applying the Word of God.

Fasting should be a regular part of a believer’s life. Matthew 6:16-18 lets us know when we fast, there is an inner transformation taking place. Growth in relationship and connection with our Heavenly Father. Fasting is not the time to play a role or impress others, trying to receive pats on the back or rewards from our peers. Instead, we dedicate our time typically spent eating and possibly socializing to time spent with Jesus. These verses encourage us to wash our face, go about our routines, and our Heavenly Father will see our sacrifice and rewards us.

Prayer:

Father God, You know the needs of Your children. Therefore, I lift this concern to you, and I believe that you see my sacrifice and will reward me. I believe you are a very present help and I thank you for your strength. In Jesus’ name, amen!

Skillwork:

When you experience overwhelm, disconnection, or a lack of peace, these may be good times to set aside time with God through prayer and fasting. Write down your concerns to keep your fast focused. Turn down the noise of the world and let Jesus speak to your heart.
