Bible Reading:
1 Corinthians 13:4
“… love does not envy or boast…“
Word:
Why does my heart always want for things? I see my friends driving a new car, moving into a new house, wearing the latest workout clothes and, while I’m “happy for them,” I secretly wish that I could have those things too. I see people traveling on Instagram, and a tinge of jealousy starts to well up inside of me.
In today’s materialistic world, it’s easy to lose sight of the things that are important. In light of eternity, none of the things that my heart desires will last. Too often I find myself living in the flesh and not living in the Spirit. In order to be content, I have to focus my mind more on the Creator and less on the created.
Paul shares with Timothy, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
As we grow in our relationship with God, our desires for the things of this world should pale in comparison to the promises of God. He has promised to meet our every need and Scripture is full of examples of Him fulfilling that promise! When we fully trust in Him we have all that we will ever need!
Prayer:
Father God, help me to find contentment through my relationship with you. I pray that you will help me to see the things of this world through the lens of eternity and to hold fast to your promise to meet my needs. Thank you for the blessings that you have already poured out on me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Skillwork:
On a piece of paper, make 2 columns. On the first, label it “Needs”, and the second, label it “Wants”. If there is anything that your truly need, pray that God will meet that need.
